Why study in Germany?

Great variety, international degree courses, excellent quality of life: Germany is one of the most popular countries to study in.

One of the most attractive higher education locations: Germany ranks as the third most popular country among international students – after the USA and the UK. There are currently some 240,000 foreign students and 18,000 international doctoral students enrolled at German universities and colleges. In 2008 alone, some 70,000 international students began studying in Germany – 10% more than in the year before. Most of them come from China, Turkey, France, Poland, Russia and the USA. One special feature of the German higher education landscape is that courses of the highest quality are not only offered in big cities like Berlin, Munich or Hamburg. A total of 170 university towns in Germany compete for students. The training offered relies not only on quality, but also internationality: many Bachelor and Master courses are taught in English or in another foreign language. Some 600 structured doctoral programmes offer especially interesting opportunities for doctoral students.

At German universities research is taken just as seriously as teaching: a great deal of emphasis is placed on working independently and many universities collaborate closely with prestigious German research institutions.
