What kind of information does a ranking generally provide?
It should help students find the appropriate higher education institution by presenting the specific strengths and weaknesses of each institution. A ranking ought to be organized by subject. That enables students to better recognize the university or college profile that matches their preferences.
What’s special about the ranking produced by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE)?
Unlike other rankings, we compare more than 300 German institutions of higher education only within individual subject areas. Even then, however, we don’t say this university is the best for this subject. We leave it up to students themselves to find the most appropriate college or university on the basis of information on courses and teaching, study results, international focus and facilities. Our ranking is not a league table, but classifies higher education institutions in one of three groups for each indicator.
What should international students pay particular attention to?
Students from outside Germany may find it interesting that our ranking is also available in English and is freely accessible on the CHE and DAAD websites. Using the “My Ranking” function enables students to select up to five indicators and receive a list of universities that offer their choice of subject and meet their preferences. Additionally, there are descriptions of the relevant courses.
