One of the oldest German-American exchange programs is celebrating its 30th anniversary: on July 14, for the 30th time, the President of Ulm University gave a warm send-off to students of business mathematics before their trip across the Atlantic. The 19 young academics will spend a year at different well-known universities all over the United States. The program is funded by the host universities, where the guests from Ulm are greatly appreciated as tutors and have been teaching mathematics for beginners for decades.
Professor Hans-Joachim Zwiesler of the Institute for Insurance Sciences is the coordinator of the exchange program. He explains: “During this time, the students have an opportunity to attain a fully-fledged degree from an American university before returning to Ulm and also graduating in Germany [...] Two full degrees with, at most, only a slightly longer period of study because of the stay in the USA – this opportunity is unique in Germany,” Zwiesler emphasizes. He goes on to say that about 700 students from Ulm have benefited from the transatlantic exchange program over the past three decades.
