The political work of the SPD-associated Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) centres on the three key areas of political education, scholarships, and research and consulting. Education and research, Islam and society, and family policy are just some of the many themes covered by the foundation that is named after the first Social Democratic president of Germany. More than 200,000 participants attended the 3,000 educational events, discussion forums and meetings the foundation held in Germany during 2008. FES also fosters international cooperation and development. In more than 100 countries – from Asia to the Middle East and Africa to the continent of America – it supports the development of civil society and state structures and promotes trade union work, human rights and equal rights.

KONRAD ADENAUER STIFTUNG
A seminar in Mexico on constitutional reform in Central America, a lecture in Egypt about the future of the European Union or a panel discussion in Berlin on economic success and social responsibility – the work of the CDU-associated Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) focuses on strengthening democracy, promoting European integration and intensifying transatlantic relations and development cooperation. The foundation supports 200 projects in more than 100 countries through 70 offices around the world. In addition to its main locations in Berlin and Sankt Augustin near Bonn, the foundation named after the first German Federal Chancellor is also active in Germany in 2 education centres and 16 training centres. The KAS is one of the largest German awarders of scholarships.

HANNS SEIDEL STIFTUNG
Democracy, peace and development are the three catchwords
on which the CSU-associated Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSS) bases its political work. Its online database provides information on a broad range of events covering 40 different subjects. The foundation named after the former Bavarian Minister President maintains international contacts with the European Union, the USA and Russia through its liaison offices in Brussels, Washington and Moscow. What initially began during the 1970s with a single project in Africa has since grown into a global commitment: today the foundation is involved in international cooperation through some 90 projects in 50 countries.

The FDP-associated Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom is strongly involved in the fields of political education, scholarships and international relations. The foundation, which is named after a Liberal politician at the time of the German Empire, organizes roughly 1000 events a year in its education centre, for its 9 nationwide regional programmes and its virtual academy on the Internet. In its international activities, the foundation focuses on the development of democratic, market-based and rule-of-law structures. It maintains contacts with the EU and North America through its Brussels and transatlantic dialogue programmes. The foundation is also represented by offices and projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

HEINRICH BÖLL STIFTUNG
The Heinrich Böll Foundation works in the fields of democracy, education and culture, economic and social affairs, ecology and international relations. The foundation, which is close to The Greens and is named after the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, also strongly promotes social emancipation and equal rights for women and men as well as cultural and ethnic minorities. Ecological issues are a major element of its work in Germany and abroad. Internationally, the Heinrich Böll Foundation is represented by 27 offices in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe. National programmes like the one in Nigeria, for example, promote women’s rights and conflict management, while cooperation in Cambodia focuses on resources policy and environmental policy.

ROSA LUXEMBURG STIFTUNG
The work of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLS), which is close to The Left party, is organized in several areas. In the field of political education, the foundation arranges seminars, debates and lectures on some 20 different themes – ranging from education and social theory to globalization and social policy. Like other political foundations, it also awards scholarships. The foundation, which is named after the Socialist revolutionary murdered in 1919, has supported nearly 900 scholarship-holders from Germany and abroad since 1999. Ten offices in Europe, Asia, Latin America, southern Africa and the Arab world are responsible for its international work, which focuses on the issues of globalization, democratic participation, integration and the prevention of violence.
