How creative individuals from North America make a living in Germany

Careers “Made in Germany”

They are actors, rock stars, marketing managers or artists – and they are all successful: Women and men from the USA and Canada who have made a life for themselves in Germany

Peaches, Electroclash singer

Merrill Beth Nisker was a teacher in Canada, but she found the creative atmosphere for her new life in Berlin, as Peaches, the widely-celebrated Electroclash singer. Today she is to be found not in front of a class, but on stage, with the likes of Pink.

Steven Althaus, Marketing professional

Anyone can sell cars – but insurance? Nevertheless, Steven Althaus took Allianz’ job-offer in 2002. And a good decision it was, too. Meantime, the Canadian manages the multi-billion insurance company’s international brand-communications from its headquarters in Munich.

Leslie Malton, actress

Daughter of a diplomat, the American Leslie Malton grew up in Washington, Boston, New York, Vienna and Berlin. And she stayed here in the German capital. Perhaps because this was where she first acted on stage, at the age of five, and surely because the city is at the heart of Europe: the actress travels the length and breadth of the continent for her countless stage, TV and cinema engagements.

Matt Saunders and Katarina Burin, artists

Their favourite place is the “Wohnzimmer” in Prenzlauer Berg, the in-district in Berlin. From the café-bar there, the two Berlin fans Katarina Burin, Canada, and Matt Saunders, USA, like to send their thoughts abroad, whereas they themselves have opted to stay – contrary to their initial plans. Berlin simply provides a lot of inspiration, the artist-couple believes. After all, Berlin “is full of history,” so Katarina Burin, and a “melting-pot brim full of interesting people from all over the world,” Saunders adds. Who would ever think of leaving?
