Six finalists picked for German Book Prize

Six finalists were announced Wednesday for the German Book Prize, the country's top prize for novelists.

The winner is to be announced October 4 at the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The finalists and titles are Jan Faktor (Georg's Worries About the Past, or Into the Empire of the Holy Testicle Ding-Dong of Prague), Thomas Lehr (September: Fata Morgana), Melinda Nadj Abonji (Pigeons Fly Away), Doron Rabinovici (Elsewhere), Peter Wawerzinek (Raven Love) and Judith Zander (Things We Said Today).

A panel of judges chose the shortlist from nearly 150 nominations by publishing houses.

The prize is open to any work of fiction written in the German language and published in the past year.

The award, with 37,500 euros (48,000 dollars) distributed to the top three authors, is organized by the Boersenverein, the organization of German publishers and booksellers.
