It is also possible to study abroad for a degree “made in Germany”: during the last 10 years some 60 German higher education initiatives have been realized – ranging from individual degree courses to complete universities.
The German University in Cairo, the German Institute of Science & Technology in Singapore and soon the German-Turkish University in Istanbul are just three of many examples. Renowned German universities are offering high-quality courses and in the process cooperating closely with the host nations. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Foreign Office support these initiatives through the DAAD within the framework of international research and academic relations policy. Demand is especially strong for German engineering, economic and natural sciences. Teaching and research at five centres of excellence in Africa focus on developmental topics such as microfinance and health research. Innovative research contributions to development are being made by the five German universities involved in the exceed programme for higher education excellance in Africa, India and Central America.
